Returning to sport after eye surgery
Published on 20 September 2026
Almost every sporty patient asks me: "doctor, when can I run, swim, play again?". The answer depends on two things: the type of activity and the technique used.
Here are my milestones, bearing in mind that the personalised instructions you receive at the practice always take priority.
Why wait a little
After refractive surgery, the surface of the eye heals. Three risks justify the precautions: contact with water (pools, sea, lakes), which can favour infection; direct impacts, especially after LASIK, where the corneal flap must stabilise; and sweat or dust, which irritate a still-fragile surface. Nothing dramatic: it is mainly about giving the eye time to recover.
The timelines, activity by activity
As a guide, for laser surgery:
- Walking: from the next day.
- Running, cycling, gentle exercise: usually from the 2nd or 3rd day.
- Light weights: after a few days; avoid straining and breath-holding at first.
- Swimming with watertight goggles: usually around the 2nd week, on a medical green light.
- Pool, sea, sauna, steam room without protection: avoid for 2 to 4 weeks.
- Contact sports (basketball, football, martial arts): about 1 month, with eye protection.
- Combat sports and violent impacts (boxing, rugby): a longer delay, to be confirmed case by case.
- Scuba diving: reserve for after complete healing and medical advice.
It also depends on the technique
LASIK
Visual recovery is fast, but the corneal flap calls for care against impacts: we protect the eye from knocks for about a month and postpone contact sports accordingly. See also my LASIK recovery timeline.
SMILE
A flapless technique, SMILE often allows a slightly more flexible return to exertion. The same precautions regarding water and impacts still apply in the first weeks.
PRK / Trans-PRK
The surface laser heals more slowly, as the outer corneal layer has to regrow. Gentle activities resume after one to two weeks, more intense exertion after a few weeks.
Phakic lenses (ICL / IPCL)
After a phakic lens is implanted, resumption depends on healing of the micro-incision and follows specific instructions: avoid water and intense exertion in the first weeks, as I recommend.
Your questions about sport
Swimming with watertight goggles is usually allowed around the second week, on a medical green light. Without protection, avoid pools, the sea and hot baths for two to four weeks, while the eye heals.
Allow about a month for common contact sports, with eye protection. Combat sports and violent impacts often need a longer delay, which we set together depending on your technique and healing.
Yes. LASIK calls for care against impacts because of the corneal flap; SMILE, being flapless, often allows a slightly more flexible return to exertion; PRK heals more slowly on the surface; a phakic lens follows instructions specific to intraocular surgery.
Walking, yes. For running, cycling or gentle exercise, we usually wait until the 2nd or 3rd day. At first, avoid straining, heavy sweating into the eyes and, of course, rubbing your eyes.
For sports with a risk of impact or splashing, eye protection remains advisable in the long term: it protects your correction and your eyes, whatever technique you had.
Thinking about surgery?
Sporty or not, a work-up defines the technique best suited to your eyes and your lifestyle. I see patients at Cabinet OPHTALIFE, in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris.
